The keys to breaking 100 in Golf

After you take a deep breathe and follow these keys, It won’t just be 100 that you are going to break!

Why 100?

When most people think of setting a goal in golf, they think of breaking 100.

Why is this?

It’s because it is the first challenge you face as a golfer.

Most golfers first rounds could be well over 100!

That being said, it doesn’t mean you need to beat yourself up over it, golf is HARD!

Either way, hitting the ball 99 times feels SO much better than 100!

So… how do you make this happen??

The first key: Using specific golf clubs

In order to at least begin golf, you should help yourself by learning a bit about each club so you can make sure you’re using the right one.

If you start out and have no idea how to even play, it’s going to be a LONG day.

However, here is a key to the basics of each golf club category.

Driver:

  • Use off the Tee

Woods:

  • Long hitting clubs
  • Can be used off the deck
  • Can be used on the tee

Hybrids:

  • More forgiving than an iron
  • Less control
  • Further distance

Irons:

  • Most controlling clubs
  • Vary in distance
  • Used on fairway and rough

Wedges:

  • Short range, about 150-100 yards and in depending on the golfer

Putters:

  • Mostly on the greens
  • Can be used anywhere (like the fringe)

The second key: Swinging your swing

The picture above is professional golfer, Hosung Choi. Although his swing is very unique, he plays well!

When starting golf, your swing will most likely be different than everyone else.

After all, everyone has a different golf swing.

However, you can still win by “swinging your own swing.”

It can be permanent, or it doesn’t need to be, but swinging a swing your comfortable with can help you break 100.

After a while, depending on the swing result, you can keep it.

If no quality results are being produced, once you gather the basics, it’s time to switch the swing.

The third key: Managing your misses

Water splashing as a golf ball is entering it

Everyone has a miss in golf. You can’t hit the exact shot you want every single time.

However, you can manage your misses. What I mean is you can make your miss, not “as bad.”

For example, if you normally miss the target to the left, you can manage your shot to calculate this.

So, if there is the pin in the center of the green, and water on the left, you might aim to hit the part of the green that is between the pin and the right side of the green. This way, if you hit the shot straight, you’re fine, but if you miss left, it won’t go too far left where it ends up in the water.

Steps to managing your miss:

  1. Find your miss
  2. Calculate how much variation there is in the miss
  3. Practice aiming in a spot where it calculates for a good shot, or a miss, resulting in a quality golf shot

The fourth key: Game Knowledge

As you play more golf, you develop more knowledge for the game.

With knowledge, you are able to play at a higher level, and ultimately score better in golf!

Knowledge comes in two main ways:

  • Course knowledge: Knowing the course, knowing certain distances, and knowing how to play certain shots
  • Theory-based knowledge: Actually swinging the club and which adjustments will impact certain results

Having these two knowledge categories, you are able to increase the quality of golf you play.

For example, if you know a course very well because you’ve played it, scene it on tv, or whatever the reason is, you will most likely have course knowledge. Now you know what type of shot you need to hit. Now this is where theory-based knowledge comes in, because once you know what shot to hit, you need to be able to hit the shot. Theory-based knowledge allows you to understand what needs to be done, now it’s time to practice and make sure you do hit that shot!

The fifth key: Video analysis

To be able to hit the right shot, you NEED to practice.

Not just practice, but analyzing. The best way to analyze is through Video Analysis.

What actually is Video Analysis?

Video Analysis is where you watch the golf swing back on video.

Whether it be a professional golfer or someone else you might know with a swing you know works, just visually seeing a swing that produces quality results on the golf course in real time or slow motion helps a ton!

The way it helps is because you can see what your swing is struggling with by recording it, and then comparing and contrasting it to a pro.

Once you know what it is you need to fix, it’s time to practice your fundamentals and break 100!

This doesn’t mean you need to fully switch your swing, but changing a few fundamental keys will allow you to swing your swing while producing quality golf results!

If you follow these tips, you will very quickly see your scores will increase.

Not only that, but you will be on the road to breaking 100 consistently!
